Now, in spring, the thick winter fur is exchanged for a light “summer dress”, in autumn the protection against the cold grows back. Hormonal factors can also play a role in the change of coat: bitches often shed during heat or after pregnancy. And with neutered males, the change of coat is sometimes spread throughout the year. Normally, however, it only lasts six to seven weeks.

Here are our tips for this time. Top priority: brush and comb your hair every day. This not only keeps the apartment clean, but also helps your darling with the changeover. Because brushing improves blood flow to the skin and dead hair, especially from the undercoat, is removed effortlessly. This is important to prevent tangles in the fur. These not only look unsightly, but can also lead to bacterial infections, eczema and fungal infections.

Which brush for which fur? For short fur, a so-called fur curry comb is very well suited, as it guarantees particularly gentle fur care and promotes blood circulation thanks to soft rubber nubs. For four-legged friends with wiry or long fur that tends to tangle or tangle, you should use a detangling knife before brushing. This makes it easy to remove tangles and knots. Some dogs are very sensitive to their skin and don't like combs or brushes. Here a massage glove is a good alternative that gently removes dead hair.

There are special combs for long-haired dogs that help to untangle the long strands with a mix of coarse and fine teeth. Brushes that work out the thick undercoat are also particularly suitable in spring. Silky and fine fur should first go through with a fur comb and then massage the skin with a natural hair brush.
