Dogs and cats on New Year's Eve: last-minute tips to counter the fear of fireworks

The exciting Christmas celebrations are hardly over when the next challenge approaches: New Year's Eve. While the last few years have been a real blessing for our darlings due to the Corona restrictions, this year will unfortunately be very extreme.

Many animals react in panic to the rockets and firecrackers that are set off at midnight because they cannot classify the flashes of light and noise and feel threatened and afraid.

It would therefore be ideal if your dog noticed as little as possible of the banging outdoors. Therefore, close all windows well before midnight, pull the curtains in front of them and - if there are any - let the blinds down. This reduces noise and flashes of light.

Experts also advise playing classical music softly, as it has a calming effect on animals. Above all, we convey security to our darlings by sticking to the usual daily routine. The only thing you should limit your cats' freedom of movement on this day is to leave your dog on a tow leash when going for walks. Because unfortunately there are a few trigger-happy people in every neighborhood who, despite the ban, start shooting days beforehand.

Unleashed dogs or cats could get frightened and run away in a panic. So bring your pets into the house at noon and take the last lap with your dog in the early evening. It should also be clear to dog and cat owners that they are not allowed to leave their pets at home alone on New Year's Eve. Your presence and a calm attitude are particularly important to take away your darling's fear of banging. It is therefore essential to refrain from comforting and pitying the dog or cat while the party is raging outside. Your darling gets the impression that something really bad must be going on out there if you suddenly care so intensely.

Rather be very relaxed:

Your dog can of course sit very close to you and you can radiate security.

When the spook is over, it's time to welcome in the new year with an extra treat. But be careful: Even days later, you still have to be careful, because leftover firecrackers can still be ignited.
